Old and New On September 22, 1953, Bishop Russell McVinney, Bishop of Providence, established St. John Vianney Parish. The first Mass was celebrated in the Diamond Hill Inn on Sunday, October 4, 1953. Since the Inn was inadequate to accommodate the number of parishioners, ground was broken for the construction of a new church on October 14, 1957. The church was completed and dedicated on November 23, 1958. It was designed as most churches were prior to the Second Vatican Council: the sanctuary was far at the front, and communion rails separated the sanctuary from the people in the pews, who were, by and large, spectators. Since the Second Vatican Council, the meaning of Christian community has evolved to include priests and people as one Body of Christ. Accordingly, church buildings are now designed to reflect the belief that baptism unites us in Christ, that both the Word of God and the Eucharist nourish us, and that the pulpit and altar are gathering places for Catholic worship. It was this understanding of church that prompted St. John Vianney Parish to undertake a major renovation campaign in 1993. Since the estimated cost for the renovations was far beyond what the parish had in savings, it began a parish-wide fundraising campaign. This campaign resulted in 530 parish families pledging funds to be paid over a three to five year period. Construction began on August 1, 1994, and was completed on January 15, 1995. Since the first fundraising campaign, the parish has grown with over 300 new families. All have been invited to join in phase two of the fundraising campaign to assist in the effort to achieve the goal of a debt free church and to continue necessary renovations, which includes replacing the original roof on the church building. Both long time members and new parishioners may then share a sense of pride and satisfaction that together we will have created a church that truly reflects the reality that we are one "Body of Christ."
We hope you will enjoy looking at some photographs of the "old" and "new" St. John Vianney Church. Take a look at the latest segment of our church renovation - photos of our new stained glass window, in progress.
